Why should I even do this?

A few reasons:

  • The Bible clearly endorses meditating on scripture (Joshua 1:8, Psalm 1:2, Psalm 119:11, etc.)
  • God’s word is truth (John 17:17). In a confused and confusing world, truth is of supreme value.
  • Knowledge of truth promotes wisdom, justice,
  • Prayerfully spending time in God’s word is spending time with God.
  • The more time we spend with God, the better we know him.
  • The better we know God, the more clearly we understand his will.
  • Meditation brings us close to God and transforms us for the better.
  • If you approach Bible meditation honestly and humbly, you will grow, spiritually.

How do I get started?

Your basic requirements are:

  • Time. This is your most precious commodity. Meditation is worthwhile however much time you spend on it. Starting with just two minutes is great! (That’s how my YouTube Bible meditation channel started: two minute meditations.) If you can pick a consistent time for meditation (e.g. at breakfast, or when cleaning your teeth), this will help develop a healthy meditation habit.
  • Text. You can pick any passage of scripture! If you’re not sure which Bible passage to use, you could follow any of these sites, which all publish a verse/passage of the day:
  • Trust. Head into meditation trusting God. He will speak to you. He will transform you. This process may be quieter and slower than we would choose, but his ways are not our ways.

For instance

Let’s assume you’ve found a quiet place to meditate, where you won’t be disturbed. You could start with this prayer:

Lord God, thank you for your word. As I spend time meditating on your word, please change me and transform me as you choose. Amen.

Next, read the passage a few times. It helps to read it aloud. You might start with Romans 14:19 (ESV):

So then let us pursue what makes for peace and for mutual upbuilding.

Having read the passage, ask yourself some questions, and try to answer them. For example:

  • What does this passage mean to me?
  • How does this passage reflect the character of Jesus?
  • What could I do or change, in the light of this passage?

Finally, finish with a prayer:

Heavenly Father, once more I commit my life into your hands. I am your servant. Holy Spirit, please grow your fruit in me. Jesus, you are the Living Word. Have your way in my life. Amen.
