DIG Meditation

DIG is a simple form of Bible meditation, which is easy to remember and practice. It consists of just three stages:

  • Digest
  • Interact
  • Give thanks

It starts with selecting a passage of scripture, usually one or two verses.

Digest

In the first stage of DIG, we take in and “digest” the Word of God. This involves:

  • Reading the passage, ideally out loud
  • Repeating the reading – the more times you repeat it, the more the passage is impressed on your consciousness and into your heart
  • Optionally writing out the verse, which also helps with intensifying its impression on you
  • Dwelling on the verse – reflecting, turning it over, but not necessarily asking questions of it at this stage

Interact

The second stage is interaction with the passage, e.g.:

  • Ask and answer questions, such as:
    • What does this passage tell me about God/Jesus/the Holy Spirit?
    • What does this passage tell me about the world?
    • What does this passage tell me about myself?
    • What is God asking me to do/how should I respond?
    • What is the meaning of this passage to me right now?
    • What might the passage have communicated to early readers?
    • How does this passage affect my feelings?
  • Scrutinse the words and phrases, and note any that particularly strike you
  • Ask the Holy Spirit to illuminate the passage
  • Quietly allow the words to sit in your mind and heart, without further active thought

Give thanks

Finally, we respond to the passage in a state of gratitude. This may take the form of a prayer or a song. Some people like to draw a picture by way of response. The emphasis here is on worship, thankfulness and submission to God and to his Word.
